Grid-Tie vs Hybrid vs Off-Grid Solar, Explained

One Decision Shapes Everything

People often start the solar conversation asking about panels and brands. But the decision that actually shapes what solar does for you is none of those — it is the system design: grid-tie, hybrid, or off-grid. Get this right and the system does exactly what you wanted. Get it wrong and you can spend real money on a system that cuts your bill but still leaves you in the dark when dumsor hits, or one that costs far more than your situation needed.

Solar AC Ghana designs and installs all three across Accra, by EC-certified technicians, since 1989. Here is the honest, plain-English difference — and which one tends to suit Accra.

Grid-Tie — Cuts the Bill, Off With the Grid

A grid-tie system has panels and an inverter, and it works alongside ECG. During the day, your solar offsets what you would otherwise draw from the grid, cutting your bill. There is no battery.

What It Does Well

It is the lowest cost per kW because there is no battery bank to buy. For a household or business whose main goal is purely to reduce the ECG bill, and whose grid supply is reasonably stable, grid-tie does that job most cheaply.

Its One Limitation

When the grid goes down, a grid-tie system goes down with it — for safety, it cannot feed power while ECG is off. So during dumsor, you have no solar and no grid. If continuity matters to you, this is the catch.

Hybrid — Cuts the Bill AND Rides Out Dumsor

A hybrid system adds a battery bank to the panels and a hybrid inverter. It does both jobs: offsets your daytime consumption to cut the bill, and stores energy so you keep running when the grid drops.

This is the design most Accra homes and businesses actually want, because it solves the two problems people care about at once — the bill and dumsor. Lights, fridge, Wi-Fi, and a correctly sized AC keep running through an outage on the battery. It costs more than grid-tie because of the battery, but it buys you continuity that grid-tie cannot.

Sizing the Battery Is the Skill

A hybrid system is only as good as its battery sizing. Too little storage and the battery is flat before the outage ends; too much and you have paid for capacity you never use. We size the battery to how long your outages typically run and what you need to keep alive during them — see inverter and battery systems.

Off-Grid — Full Independence From ECG

An off-grid system runs entirely on its own — a larger panel array and a larger battery bank, with no grid as a backstop. Everything the site uses comes from the sun and the battery.

When It Makes Sense

Off-grid suits sites with no reliable grid supply at all — a remote location, a new development without a connection, or somewhere the grid is so unreliable that depending on it is pointless. It is the most expensive design because it must carry the entire load alone, with enough battery to cover cloudy days and nights.

When It Does Not

For a typical Accra property that already has a grid connection — even an unreliable one — full off-grid is usually over-engineering. A hybrid system gives you continuity through dumsor at lower cost, while still using the grid when it is there. We will tell you honestly if off-grid is more than you need.

What It Costs and How It Pays Back

Our indicative 2026 ranges are roughly ₵18,000–25,000 for 1.5kVA, ₵35,000–50,000 for 3kVA, and ₵55,000–85,000 for 5kVA — with hybrid and off-grid sitting higher within and above these because of the battery. A system sized to a real bill commonly cites a 4.5–6 year payback in Ghana (claimed-indicative). The firm price and your own payback come from a free survey of your bill and load, never a blind phone quote.

Built to Standard, All Three

Whichever design suits you, the kit is real: IEC 61215 / IEC 61730 panels, IEC 62109 inverters, installed to L.I. 2449 with proper DC isolation, surge protection, and earthing, by technicians under the Energy Commission Solar PV licence.

The Short Version

Grid-tie cuts the bill cheapest but dies with the grid. Hybrid cuts the bill and keeps you running through dumsor — the popular Accra choice. Off-grid frees you from ECG entirely but costs the most and only makes sense where the grid is not an option. The right one for you depends on your bill, your loads, and how much dumsor pain you are willing to carry — which is exactly what we work out on the survey.
