Can Solar Really Run My Air Conditioner?
The Question Everyone Asks First
It is the first question we get on almost every survey: “Can solar run my AC?” The honest answer is yes — but it comes with a condition that the sales-driven side of this industry tends to skip. Solar can run your air conditioner if, and only if, the array, inverter, and battery are sized to carry it. Most of the disappointment people feel with solar in Accra traces back to one thing: a system that was never built for the load it was sold to run.

Why AC Is the Hard Load
An air conditioner is not like a light or a phone charger. It is a motor-driven compressor, and it draws hard — especially at the moment it starts. That start-up surge is what undersized systems fail on. A 1.5HP split unit might run steadily on a modest draw, but the inrush when the compressor kicks in can be several times that for a fraction of a second.
Running Load vs Start-Up Surge
Two numbers matter. The running load is what the unit draws once it is cooling steadily. The start-up surge is the brief spike when the compressor engages. A system sized only for the running load will trip or stall every time the compressor cycles on. We size the inverter for the surge, not just the average — which is the single most common thing a cheaper guess gets wrong.
Inverter AC Changes the Maths
A modern inverter-type AC (R-410A or R-32 refrigerant) ramps its compressor up and down instead of slamming on and off. It draws far less over a day and surges far more gently, which makes it the natural partner for solar. If you are buying AC and solar together, an inverter unit is almost always the right call — we will say so on the survey.
So How Much Solar Does an AC Need?
There is no single answer, because it depends on how many units, what size, and how many hours a day you run them. But to make it concrete:

Grid-Tie, Hybrid, or Off-Grid for AC?
If your goal is to cut the ECG bill your AC drives up, and you still want cooling when dumsor hits, a hybrid (battery-backed) system is the popular Accra answer. The Honest Payback
A solar system sized to a real bill commonly cites a 4.5–6 year payback in Ghana (claimed-indicative), after which the power is effectively free for the panel life. Because AC is what runs your bill up, offsetting it with solar is often where the payback maths works hardest — but we estimate yours from your own bills, not a brochure number.
